Frequently asked questions
Why become a trustee?
Gloucestershire has over 1800 charities that work in and within our communities to make a real difference in peoples lives. Trustees are volunteers who, by performing a leadership role, help charities to run effectively. By becoming a trustee, you will be able to 'give back' to your local community while developing new skills, gaining new experiences and meeting people from a variety of different backgrounds - it's also a great way to enhance your CV if required.
What training and support will be provided?
No previous experience is necessary - our fully funded programme has been designed to equip you with the skills required to become a charity trustee and includes:
- Information sessions to introduce the programme & meet our team
- Training sessions to develop your skills & knowledge
- Personalised support from our team, from sign up to completion

How does the programme work?
Once you've attended one of our Information Sessions, you can book a place on our online training sessions. These sessions will cover governance (what trustees do), strategy (how charities decide what to do) and finance (how charities manage finance). By signing up to this programme you agree to attend each session. You can choose whether you would like to attend the afternoon sessions or the evening sessions, however we cannot offer a combination of the two. The dates (for your diary) are below:
Evening Sessions -
- Tues 17 Oct 2023 (6pm-8pm), Tues 14 Nov 2023 (6pm-8pm) and Tues 5 Dec 2023 (6pm-8pm)
We will discuss the training sessions and enrolment in more detail during the Information Session. The closing date for applications for our training sessions is 12 noon on Monday 16 October 2023 - applications can be made by emailing Cate: This email address is being protected from spambots. Why are you offering this programme?
Our Trustee Bank Programme aims to ensure that every charity in Gloucestershire exercises a gold standard of governance and is able to recruit individuals from a range of backgrounds and life experiences. Trustees come from all sectors of society, from every background and with every type of work and life experience. It is part of our core mission to make trusteeship accessible to those who are currently underrepresented on charity boards, and we are especially interested in giving voice to those whose experience sits at the intersection of class, race, gender and disability or any other protected characteristic.
My organisation/company offers an Employer Supported Volunteering Scheme, can I use my hours for a trustee role?
You may be able to do this, for example the NHS enables employees up to 15 hours a year to undertake this programme and/or fulfill a trustee role. Please ask your line manager for more information.
Who can I contact for more information?
