To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, we’ve shared stories about inspirational women who work and volunteer in our sector this week. Our final spotlight shines brightly on Vicci Livingstone Thompson.
Vicci Livingstone Thompson is the founder and CEO of Inclusion Gloucestershire, but she is also a trustee for Active Impact which aims to bring young people who are non-disabled and disabled together in fun activities and events. She shares her thoughts on being a trustee below and why she’d encourage others to consider being one.
“I have been a trustee of Active Impact for over 10 years, having previously worked and then volunteered with them. Their focus on inclusive, fun activities for disabled and non-disabled children and young people together, aligned closely with my own passions, and I loved their values".
“You don’t need a degree or a particular career background to be a trustee”
“In my day job, I work in leadership and have a degree in Business Management, so being a trustee is a great way to use relevant skills and experience around things like finance and HR in a different way.
You don’t need a degree or a particular career background to be a trustee. A really important aspect is lived experience, so knowing what might be important to the people the charity serves and then supporting it strategically to deliver those things.
I love the flexibility of being a trustee – we usually have board meetings after I have finished my other job, and I can fit in trustee-related work at a time that suits me.
I would really encourage other women to consider being a trustee. It is a voluntary role that feels really interesting, meaningful and worthwhile, and it also helps me to learn, develop and meet brilliant people".
