Course overview
This taster session will provide an introduction to mental health and will enable you to:
- Understand how people cope with adverse situations in life and work;
- Learn about common mental health conditions, Depression, Anxiety and Stress and how to manage them;
- Understand an employer’s duty of care and its implications; and
- Think about what to do in the event of a mental health situation in the workplace.
In preparation for the session, please think about a mental health concern you have been aware of in a workplace. Consider also whether you feel confident to discuss it and think about how you can speak about it without breaking someone’s confidentiality.
About Jessica Sullivan
Jessica is Head of Training and Development at Gloucestershire Counselling Service (GCS) she has a master’s degree in Counselling as well as a first degree in education, outside GCS she works as a counsellor and counselling supervisor.
Jessica worked for many years in the corporate sector in sales and training and then decided to retrain as a counsellor in 2000. Following the completion of her training she naturally gravitated towards a corporate environment, working in Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP) for more than 20 years. During this time, she provided workplace counselling, training, and critical incident support.
In 2016 Jessica became Clinical Director of one of the UK’s oldest and well respected EAP’s. Jessica was part of an expert panel who formulated a Workplace Counselling Competence Framework for the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which provides a structure for and informs how counselling should be managed ethically and confidentially in organisations.
This experience has given Jessica an in depth understanding of the world of work and how mental health issues can affect an individual’s ability to cope day to day in the workplace, and conversely how the pressure of the workplace can affect home life and relationships. She believes that maintaining a healthy balance between home life and work life is crucial for good mental health and wellbeing.
